    According to AAP’s Guidelines for Perinatal Care, every Level 3 and 4 NICU should include in its staffing at least one developmental neonatal therapist.  As nurses save infants’ lives, therapists make infants’ lives worth living.  Managing an intensive care setting that involves staffing from outside your cost center and managerial influence can create, by their interaction with nursing, a unique challenge for the NICU Director. Having an understanding of the education, abilities, and role delineations of the therapists is mandatory for smooth and effective NICU practice.  Collaboration at its highest level is needed and when present, can create massive improvement in the short and long-term care and infant outcomes.

    Director of Education

    Lisa Kleinz, MA, SLP/L, CNT, CLC, is currently the Director of Education for Dr. Brown’s Medical.  She is a Speech Pathologist who worked in level 3 and 4 NICUs for over 25 years prior to joining Dr. Brown’s in 2016.   She has also served as a Developmental Care Specialist, working with staff and families to create change in the NICU. Her certifications include Newborn Individualized Developmental Care Assessment Program (NIDCAP), Developmental Care Designation (NANN), Infant Massage Instructor, and Certified Lactation Specialist. She is also a Certified Neonatal Therapist and a member of the National Association of Neonatal Therapists. In addition, Lisa was one of the founding members of the Neonatal Therapy National Certification Board and helped to create a certification for neonatal therapists. 

    Lisa received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and her Master’s degree from Indiana University. She has presented at several conferences and webinars and also teaches a 2 day course for Education Resources on Developmental Care in the NICU.

    Dr. Elizabeth Jeanson is a Physical therapist and Developmental Specialist at Sanford Children’s Hospital in South Dakota with over 25 years of experience.  She holds certifications in Neonatal therapy, neonatal touch and massage, and Developmental care Specialist. Throughout her career she has lectured at many national conferences. Elizabeth works closely with her Nursing management Team on Implementing Developmental Care Change in the NICU.

    Amy Brassfield has dedicated 29 years to the care of critically ill neonates and pediatric patients.  Her work includes extensive experience at the bedside as well as leadership; most notably as a Neonatal/Pediatric Critical Care Flight Nurse, Public Health Clinical Nurse Specialist, and now Manager of Clinical Operations for Nursing and Patient Care at Riley Hospital for Children’s Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She previously held the role of Manager and Interim Senior Director at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital’s 97 bed, Level IV NICU in St. Petersburg, Florida. Amy is certified in Neonatal Pediatric Critical Care Transport and is Public Health Clinical Nurse Specialist-Board Certified.  She is passionate about innovative approaches to caring for patients and their families.

    Rachel Rivas has more than 30 years of nursing experience. She began her career as a bedside nurse and worked her way up through management to her current position as Executive Director of the Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at University Health System in San Antonio, Texas. Rachel has served in this position for the last nine years dedicating her career to the staff, patients, and families she serves. Rachel takes pride in serving as a surveyor for the American Academy of Pediatrics providing assessment and consultative services to organizations throughout Texas to ensure the highest quality of care for patients.

Her twin sons were born 2 months early in 2014 and have inspired her to help others who are facing the same challenges while bridging the gap between home and hospital. This dynamic philanthropist was named a 2017 KYW Rising Star in the Philadelphia area and has guest blogged for maternity company Ingrid and Isabel. She was also a keynote speaker at the 2018 Wives of the NFL SET an Example conference. Kelly resides in the Philadelphia area with her husband and her four young children.

    Kara Curnen MSN, BSN, RN, NEA-BCis the Director of Neonatal Critical Care Services at Primary Children’s Hospital. Kara has been in this role since November 2012. Kara first joined Primary Children’s Hospital as a Patient Care

    Technician on the Infant Medical Surgical Unit in February 1998. Kara has held a variety of roles at Primary Children’s Hospital as a Nurse, Charge Nurse, Nurse Educator, and Assistant Nurse Manager. Kara has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Utah and Master of Science degree in Nursing Administration from Weber State University.

    Luann Jones, DNP, APRN, NNP-BC, NE-BC, is a board-certified Neonatal Nurse Practitioner & nurse executive who has served as the Neonatal Services Director at Arkansas Children’s Hospital for the last 8 years. She has spent her 26-year nursing career in the NICU at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, which is the only Level 4 unit in the state and a tertiary referral center. Dr. Jones serves as the current president of the Arkansas Association of Neonatal Nurses (ARANN).      Angela L. Myers MD, MPH, FAAP completed her medical degree in 2001at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine where she was recognized with the Laura L. Backus, M.D., Memorial Award for Excellence in Pediatrics. Following her pediatric residency and fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Children’s Mercy Kansas City, she completed a Master’s degree in Public Health with distinction from the University of Kansas. She is currently an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at UMKC School of Medicine and is the Associate Fellowship Program Director, after serving as the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program Director for 8 years. Following completion of the Association of Pediatric Program Directors Leadership in Education and Academic Development program in 2013, Angie was elected to the APPD Fellowship Program Directors Executive Committee, serving as Chair in 2016-2017. Currently, Angie serves as Chair for the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society Training Program Committee, and serves on the American Board of Pediatrics, Pediatric Infectious Diseases Subboard. These national commitments led to Angie serving as the lead author for the development of national subspecialty specific curriculum and assessment tools. Over the past 3 years, Angie has served as a steering committee member of the Subspecialty Pediatric Investigator Network, helping to lead educational research studies among all pediatric subspecialty training programs across the nation. Dr. Myers has authored over 50 peer reviewed manuscripts and 12 book chapters. She has served as the primary investigator on 7 funded grants, most recently related to increasing human papillomavirus vaccine rates by linking to the provider recommendation. She won the Clinical Advances in Pediatrics Faculty Award in 2015 for outstanding teaching and support of the community pediatrician and the Department of Pediatrics Established Career for Clinical Care Achievement Award in 2018.
